| Several
long walks are possible through varied terrain. Walking
routes can be found in a range of maps and guides
available from local Visitor
Information Centres. If you're looking for a challenge
then you can walk all or part of the South Downs Way.
At 99 miles (160km) in length the trail stretches from
Winchester in the west to Eastbourne and Beachy Head
in the east. The path is believed to originate from
a trading route for flint which dates back to the Stone
Age and as it follows the ridges of the South Downs
it affords sweeping views over the Arun Valley and the
coast.
The
bridle ways offer the perfect excuse to see the Downs
from horseback. The going is relatively easy and there
are few gates, no stiles and a generally good surface.
Bridle ways are also accessible to cyclists, and the
northern part of the district provides perfect terrain
for mountain biking.
